Abstract


The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of new caries activity test which used pH 5.4, 30% sucrose liquid medium. The caries experience and caries activity of 220 second grade elementary school children were examined Caries experience was measured by dt, ft, dft, DT, FT, DFT, dDT, fFT and dDfFT indexes. Caries activity was measured by the pH drop of the pH 5.4, 30% sucrose liquid medium which, was inoculated by dental plaque and incubated for 4 days. Dental plaque was sampled from the subject¢¥s upper buccal tooth surfaces by a cotton applicator and the latter was directly put into the test tube containing the medium. Every 24 hours pH was read by observing the color change of pH indicator bromeresol green in the medium with the color standard. 3 or 4 days pHs were converted to scores and then added together. There was significant correlation between caries experience and caries activity test score. Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient between dDfFT index and the sum of caries activity test scores for 96 hours was 0.4186(P=0.0000). High caries activity group(pH<5.0)_had 2-3_or 1.5-2-fold more dDfFTs than low caries activity group(pH©ø 5.0).
Therefore, the new caries activity test which uses pH 5.4; 30%, sucrose liquid medium may be used to differentiate the high caries activity group which need

intensive caries prevention from the low caries activity group as a valid and practical caries activity test.
